To promote the sport of rowing in the Hilton Head area by providing recreational and competitive rowing opportunities for the youth, scholastic and adult communities.
The Palmetto Rowing Club is 15 years old and is affiliated with the U.S. Rowing Association. It seeks
to broaden the sport of rowing and welcomes persons of all abilities and experience. It is a
501(c)(3) corporation so that the IRS recognizes donations as charitable contributions. Members include
persons who first stepped into a shell a short while ago and range up to veteran oarsmen who have
raced (and won) for decades.
We are privileged to use the lower level of the Old Oyster Factory Restaurant as our
boathouse. We have a floating dock for easy launching of our shells into Broad Creek, a marsh-bordered
protected stretch of water nearly bisecting Hilton Head Island.
The Club supports the crews of Hilton Head High School and Bluffton High School. Over
40 Students of both genders row 5 or 6 days a week with help from volunteers of the club.
The Club owns boats for sweeps rowing, singles and doubles for oarsmen of all abilities, from novices to Masters.
We also have storage racks for privately owned shells. Concept II ergometers, the rowing machine used to develop strength
and technique, are readily available to the members.
