What rowing is like
Glide across quiet water, alone in a long, narrow boat, with nothing but a tidal creek and the sound of your oars. Rowing offers something for every level, from a first-timer to an expert chasing a personal best.
It's one of the best full-body workouts there is, and easy on the joints. Despite the myth that it takes big arms, the boat is really driven by your legs and core.
Rowers here range from teens to octogenarians - no big time commitment, more calories burned than running or cycling, and dolphins, herons, or a sunrise for company.
FAQs
How fit do I need to be?Every rower needs to be able to: swim a short distance and tread water (any certified lifeguard can sign off — the Hilton Head Island Rec Center can help); turn your neck easily side to side; stay within our boats’ weight and size limits; and lift one side of a 40–50 lb boat with a buddy.
What do I wear?Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet: secure shoes that can get wet (no sandals or flip-flops), fitted shorts without pockets, a fitted top, and sun protection — hat, water-resistant sunblock, sunglasses.
Can visitors row?Experienced rowers visiting the island are welcome on Broad Creek — your first row of the week is on us.
A visitor is anyone who doesn’t live full-time in Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort, or Savannah.
